On The 11th Alpini Regiment

Mountain combat… I just got that.

I have a certain number of casual acquaintances and family members that are in the military, or are at least military adjacent. Which probably makes it doubly shameful that to this day, the majority of my military knowledge comes from having watched a shit-ton of GI Joe as a child.

The Alpini are Italian mountain troopers. That is, troopers who specialize in mountain combat.

This, as an idea, intrigues me. I like the idea of training to specifically fight in mountains. I like that the regiment was formed in the town of Bruneck, because it implies forethought.

This isn’t one of those scenarios where they were in the mountains and a war broke out, and then they realized they didn’t know how to fire their guns at that altitude, and as they breathed their last thin breath, they were all, “In the future, we should probably have some dudes who are good at this>’

No, they started in a city! Possibly a city in a mountain range, I can’t say for sure. If I randomly pull up the page on Bruneck, maybe I’ll do an update. But as it stands, Bruneck is a city where people decided to become mountain soldiers.

They were actually formulated by assorted members of the 4th, 2nd, and 6th regiments, making them a kind of supergroup. If you think about it, they’re essentially the Velvet Revolver of Italian mountain combat squadrons.

And when you’ve referenced Velvet Revolver, you know to call it a night…
