Dummy Talk

I think we should bring back the word “dummy”…

So many of our modern insults are too mean these days, don’t you think? Whatever happened to the harmless jibe, the verbal equivalent of rapping a friend good-naturedly across the knuckles?

‘Dummy’ used to be that, and could be again, if we let it.

When you call somebody a dummy, as opposed to a ‘dumbass’, or an ‘idiot’, or even a ‘fuck-face’, what we’re saying is “Hey, you’re not that bright, but that’s okay; it’s kind of charming. And furthermore, I’m pretty charming for having been so gentle about all this…”

Calling someone a ‘dummy’ is the pillow fight of insults. It’s all fun, and nobody really gets hurt, do they?

Call someone you love a ‘dummy’ today; they’ll thank you later.

And by the way, for those of you out there who want to be a naysayer, going on about co-opting ventriloquist culture… come on, don’t be so stuck in the past! We’re in a Post-Puppeteer society, these words can’t hurt you anymore.

It’s not “your” word anymore; it belongs to the world…
