Angels On Tape

At first, I couldn’t be sure what I was even seeing…

The tape came unlabeled in the mail, and with no return address. Maybe that should have been a red flag, but I suppose curiosity got the better of me.

The first five minutes was static, and I’m not even sure why I didn’t turn it off. It’s almost as if they were giving me every last chance to bail out.

Of course I ignored all the warning signs…

Through the snowy haze of the static, an actual image began to take shape. It looked like an angel, but one buried in shadows. The screen would shift, and the light with it, but it never revealed the angel. The shadows seemed to move with the image.

Another warning…

And still I kept watching.

Time seemed to stretch on, to the point where I no longer knew how long I had been watching. Every clock in the house, it seemed, had stopped old dead at 8:17.

I wonder if that’s significant somehow…

But this is what it was: me and the angel in the shadows, staring fruitlessly at one another as time itself stood still. For some reason, I was afraid to blink.

I’m not sure the angel even had eyes…
