Jack Nugg and Eddie Will hit the road. Long drive in a black car. Endless roads. No destination in mind.
Night came up fast. Jack and Eddie pulled over. Found a hotel.
Uneasy sleep. Bad dreams.
Eddie woke up screaming.
Eddie wasn’t driving; Eddie was running.
Jack had no idea.
Up with the sun. Back on the road.
Stopped for gas. Some town outside of Ozona.
Two horses, not much else.
Lunch at the diner. All eyes on the outsiders.
The Goddess poured more coffee.
Her nametag read “Jane”.
Jack struck up a conversation. Was always good for that, at least.
Found the magic words.
Now there were three for the road.
Separate rooms that night.
Lot of silence the next day, of course.
They dropped Jane off in San Angelo. Said she had a cousin round those parts.
Eddie didn’t believe her. Didn’t really matter that much, anyway, he thought.
Just like that, Jane was gone.
Back on the road not long after. Lost some time. Didn’t matter; headed nowhere anyway.
The damn Southwest. Seemed flat and dry in every direction, even though it wasn’t.
Jack’d be glad to see the end of it all…
